Does TRICARE cover breastfeeding (lactation) counseling?
Yes, TRICARE covers up to six separate outpatient breastfeeding and lactation counseling sessions per birth event. These are in addition to any support you might receive during an inpatient stay, follow‑up OB visit, or well‑child care visit. For these to be covered, the counseling must be:
- Billed using one of the preventive counseling procedure codes,
- The only service provided during the session, and
- Provided by a TRICARE‑authorized provider (like a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, or registered nurse).
This means you can get dedicated, one‑on‑one support tailored to your breastfeeding journey — and Tricare pays for it.
