The recent opening of a Baby Café in Lawrence, Massachusetts, is bringing free, professional lactation support to even more families. But what exactly is a Baby Café, and what resources are available to parents? Let’s take a closer look at the support Baby Cafés provide in communities across the country.
Baby Cafés are free, drop-in sites that provide ongoing, professional lactation care in a welcoming, informal setting. No appointment or referral is required, and families can attend as often as needed. The goals of Baby Café are to expand access to free, evidence-based breastfeeding support, reduce health disparities, and help families meet their infant feeding goals. As a 501(c)(3) national nonprofit, Baby Café supports lactating parents, families, and upcoming lactation professionals.
Baby Cafes are funded by local organizations that sponsor them, such as WIC programs, public health agencies, nonprofits, universities, and more. These organizations may use grants and donations to help cover staffing, space, and other expenses.
Who Can Attend a Baby Café?
Baby Café invites individuals from all backgrounds at any point in their feeding journey, including those who are pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding or chestfeeding, exclusively pumping, combination feeding, returning to work and stay-at-home parents, or if you’re preparing to wean. Families of all cultures, identities, family structures, and feeding goals are welcome.
What Support Is Available at a Baby Café?
Parents can receive help from a trained lactation professional with concerns such as latch, milk supply, pumping, pain, feeding patterns, and infant weight. They can also ask questions, receive evidence-based information, and connect with other parents in a relaxed, non-clinical setting.
How Do You Find a Baby Café Near You?
Attendance is free and easy, no appointment needed. Their website has easy search options to find a café near you. You can search by zip code and radius or by state and town/city. There is no limit on attendance, and parents can come as frequently as they would like. Most cafes are open for 2 hours at least once a week and may be available virtually and/or in person.

What is the BCBC Mentor Program?
The Baby Café Breastfeeding Counselor (BCBC) Mentoring Program is a training pathway that builds clinical skills by expanding breastfeeding counseling experience and helps interested participants earn hours toward the International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) exam. Those interested will work within their local café with the Lead Facilitator, if accepted. Program participation includes a fee, regular participation in Baby Café sessions, a final exam, and other responsibilities and expectations. Becoming a BCBC does not independently qualify someone as an IBCLC, as additional education, clinical experience, and examination requirements are required. Learn more about becoming a BCBC!
How can an Organization Open a Baby Café?
For those interested in starting a café in their community, Baby Café USA offers a step-by-step workshop to help organizations explore the model and understand the steps required to launch a new location. Workshops are led by Executive Director, Lisa Miller. A Baby Café Starter Kit, a personal phone support call, and more are also available for easy access to learn more or start an application!

One of the newest Baby Café locations had their grand opening on August 6, 2026 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Congratulations to Baby Café USA and the City of Lawrence! This café will be open Thursdays from 10 am-noon at the Lawrence Public Library.
